Story of the cemetery
Cemetery
The Honkanummi cemetery was inaugurated in 1956. The cemetery is located on the sandy coastal plain of the ancient Lake Ancylus. Before inauguration as a cemetery, the area served as a training field for soldiers.
The Honkanummi cemetery is the largest cemetery in Finland by area. The area covers approximately 76 hectares. The cemetery was designed by architects Aili and Niilo Pulkka. Originally, the cemetery was provisionally named the Puistola cemetery, but a decision was made to abandon it because the name was deemed misleading.
Buildings
One of the most beautiful sacral buildings in Helsinki, the Honkanummi chapel was inaugurated in 1956. The chapel building was completed in 1955, and it was designed by architect Erik Bryggman. The façade is adorned by a relief sculpted by Johan Vikainen. The chapel merges beautifully with its surroundings. The light that comes through the windows creates a delicate atmosphere in the interior.
The crematorium was built in 1991, and it was designed by Arkkitehtitoimisto Pirkko ja Pekka Piirta. The crematorium is located on the ground floor of the chapel building and contains two cremation furnaces, the newer of which was built in 2002. The crematorium is shared by the Helsinki and Vantaa parish unions.
